The APHELEIA International Seminar is an annual interdisciplinary event held in the city of Mação, Portugal, bringing together researchers, artists, and students from diverse academic backgrounds. Since its first edition in 2015, the seminar has aimed to foster dialogue between the humanities, environmental studies, cultural heritage, and the arts.
The event explores how landscapes are shaped by cultural practices, historical processes, and environmental transformations. Through lectures, workshops, artistic performances, and field visits, participants examine the relationships between knowledge, imagination, and sustainability.
Over time, the seminar has evolved into an international platform promoting collaboration across disciplines and institutions. Its themes have progressively addressed issues such as cultural governance, social transformation, community engagement, and the role of imagination in interpreting and shaping landscapes.
By integrating academic research with artistic and community-based approaches, the APHELEIA Seminar contributes to a broader understanding of cultural landscapes and their role in contemporary global challenges.
Any researchers (including junior researchers, research students, project based leaders, individuals that are starting a training process in the field of cultural landscape management) may apply to become Individual affiliate members. They must complete the online application form and be approved by the Executive Committee.
Individual full members are scholars involved in projects of the Apheleia network of partners, having current leading responsibilities of projects in the framework or in association with Apheleia. They must be proposed by two members of Apheleia and be approved by the Executive Committee.
The APHELEIA International Seminar takes place in the town of Mação, located in central Portugal. The venue can be reached by car from Lisbon in approximately two hours. Participants travelling by public transport can reach the region via Abrantes and continue by local connections.
